The Clash of the Titans – Rotary Wins

I drove to Ipoh yesterday to testify in Rotary’s trial of the century. The first of its kind since the inception of Rotary in Malaysia in 1929. The players were 2 distinguished Past District Governors and Rotary Icons in their own right. But more importantly, two really good friends.

PDG Ariff is as good an decent as men come and PDG Jimmy is a great champion of Rotary and a man who has the courage of his convictions. Both imbued with the great Rotary spirit of Service Above Self. Another day and under different circumstances, one could be the mentor and the other his prodigy. But not today.

The trial was the emanation of a lawsuit brought by PDG Jimmy against PDG Ariff for defamation because of statements he is alleged to have made over the micro credit project undertaken by the former. Those of us that attended the District Conference at the Syuen Hotel will be familiar with the issue and would have thought that in the light of the District apology to PDG Jimmy in the matter, everything was settled.

But everything continued to simmer in the background. And there were many malevolent invisible players I suspect who nurtured it along on both sides. With rumours and gossip and all manner of foul innuendoes – people who had their own axes to grind. They continuously fanned the ambers that grew into a large fire and imploded into a lawsuit that was about to engulf us all in Ipoh today.

How is a man to testify in a case where two of his best friends are on opposite sides? You cannot imagine my anxiety! One thing was crystal clear to me, regardless of what the outcome, Rotary was going to be the loser today.

Then like a miracle – the fog lifted. I was informed that both parties had been called into chambers with the judge and that the matter was settled amicably with a handshake. They had agreed for Rotary’s sake to end the fued and shook hands. This is leadership by example. I am absolutely confident that it could not have been easy for either party, convinced of their righteousness, to have given in and yet they did – Rotary Wins Today thanks to two great men, who sacrificed their personal positions for the greater good.

Let’s Keep Rotary Non Political

My good friend Dato Muslim from the Rotary Club of Pudu recently sent me an email asking me why some Rotarians are posting material of a political nature in the Rotary group email. One in particular referred to some article which apparently appeared in the Times of India about our PM Dato’ Seri Najib Tun Razak employing APCO for his image building. This story was apparently published in Free Malaysia Today (FMT).

The interesting fact is that Dato Muslim did a search with the Times of India to verify the authenticity of this article and he says, ”Regret article not found. I wonder why this Rotarian is passing this FMT story around. Doesn’t he know that Rotary is non-political, non-racial and non-religious?”
Good question.
Rotary is a service organization of business and professional leaders whom are united globally to carry out humanitarian projects, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, work towards world understanding and peace – and encourage fun and fellowship in local communities around the world.
I cannot emphasize enough that Rotary is a non-religious, non-political, non-sectarian organization.
It is a fact of life that people have different political views, have differing opinions on moral questions and religion and come from different backgrounds. Rotary is a uniting influence and this unity is forged in order that we all can put our differences aside and serve humanity.
Since the inception of Rotary we have made a real contribution to the quality of life of people around the world. The programs of Rotary have provided exceptional opportunities for youth leaders and young people in general – along with the aged and handicapped; we have contributed millions of dollars to a myriad of vital community projects; we have worked hard to lift vocational standards and business ethics within our professions and businesses; and we have almost eradicated polio from the face of the Earth.
And it’s important to acknowledge that we have achieved all of the above without intrusion into the family and social lives of our members. It is generally agreed that everyone serves in our own way, in whatever way the can and for their own reasons.
My friends, Politics is divisive and whatever our convictions are, we should keep it out of Rotary. I believe strongly in this.
My final word on politics is that of Aesop, “We hang the petty thieves and appoint the great ones to public office.”
Notwithstanding my personal views on the subject, I most certainly welcome and will publish any comment on the subject.

The Following is an extract from Rotary Trainer.

Its final – AG Mansoor Saat, the candidate chosen by the District Nominating Committee is our DGN to serve after Dr Ravee. And PP Bindi, in her second attempt failed once again to secure the nomination.

Both Mansoor and Bindi are my good friends and it was with great relief that I welcomed Bindi’s magnanimous decision not to challenge Mansoor and abide by the decision of the District Nominating Committee.

Being a challenging candidate myself before, I know only too well that the road to the Governorship is not an easy one. And that is perhaps the way it should be. Being a Governor requires many qualities – but perhaps the most important ones are patience and humility.

I have often heard Rotarians talk about this candidate being better or that candidate being better. This much I have learnt – our own estimation of our abilities, whilst important, doesn’t count in job that requires popular support. Who the better candidate is, in any given year, is a highly subjective question – and my view is that the answer is – whomever WINS!

In any democracy, majority wins.

That brings me to another issue that is closely related – the constitution of the District Nominating Committee. There has been much reform in this area, thanks to the pioneering efforts of the District Strategic Planning Committees of past. We have moved from an exclusively PDGs based nominating committee to an more representative model, involving non PDGs. But the reform is not complete. Currently, only the non PDG members of the District Nominating Committee are selected by popular vote, whereas the PDGs are not chosen by popular vote. My view is that with the exception of what is mandatory, all other members of the District Nominating Committee should be selected by popular vote at the Conference. This will make the District Nominating Committee even more representative than it is now.

Perhaps this is something we should work on for the future.

For now, Congratulations AG Mansoor. And PP Bindi, all I can say is,

For India, I have established contact with Rotarians in Cochin, Kerala and they are willing to organise the internal arrangements for our Rotarians. Should there be a group of Rotarians of at least 10, this committee could assist you in the arrangements. Airasia now flies to Cochin, so the airfare would be very reasonable. The Rotarians in Cochin would also be able to organise a trip in the backwaters and suggested the NID to be in a rural part of Kerala (heart of Kerala). There is no sub-National Immunisation Day in Kerala as there are no reports of endemic cases. Only National Immunisation Days are conducted here. Kerala is very peaceful!

Besides Kerala, you can participate in any part of the country for a NID. However, SNID’s are only conducted in certain parts of the country especially in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

For Nepal, we are looking at March 2010. The destination of Nepal has been suggested to us by RI Media Relations Dept as they are willing to sponsor a media team for this destination. From the communications with the Rotarians in Nepal, the dates have not been announced yet by the Government and as soon as it is, we will suggest an itinerary.

The dates for NID in Bangladesh have been announced as stated above and here again, should there be a group interested, this committee could assist you in the arrangements. I have established contact with the Rotarians in Bangladesh and they would be able to assist us in the internal arrangements.

Following, a summary of the latest worldwide update on polio cases:

• In 2009 to date, 394 type-1 (WPV1) polio cases have been reported globally, compared with 818 at the same time last year - a 52% decline. In endemic countries the comparison is more pronounced, with 184 WPV1 cases reported compared with 787 WPV1 at this time last year - a 77% decline. WPV1 is the most dangerous strain of wild poliovirus, due to its higher paralytic attack rate and propensity for geographical spread.

• Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari named his daughter Aseefa - the first child immunized in the polio eradication effort by her mother, the late Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto - as Polio Ambassador in Pakistan while launching this week's Nationwide Immunization Days (NIDs).

• Pakistan has been rocked by four serious security incidents this week - including an attack on the United Nations World Food Programme offices in Islamabad. However, despite the instability, the North West Frontier Province polio team estimates that only 8.7% of children under five would be "inaccessible" this round.

Afghanistan

• One new case was reported in the past week, a wild poliovirus type 3 (WPV3) case from Kandahar. This is Afghanistan's most recent case, with onset of paralysis on 20 September. The total number of cases for 2009 is 23.

India

• 36 new cases were reported in the past week (five WPV1 cases and 31 WPV3 cases), bringing the total number of cases for 2009 to 431. The WPV1s were in Samastipur and Begusarai, Bihar, Agra and Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, and Jalandhar, Punjab. The most recent case (WPV3 from west UP) was reported on 23 September

Nigeria

o No new cases were reported in the past week, meaning the total number of cases remains 382. The most recent case (WPV3 in Sokoto) had onset of paralysis on 30 August. For the second time in five weeks, Nigeria reported zero cases of wild poliovirus (WPV). In the past five weeks, Nigeria has recorded four WPV cases, with this ongoing fall in polio cases validating reports of significant improvements in the quality of immunization campaigns.

Pakistan

o No new cases were reported in the past week. The total number of cases for 2009 remains 62. The most recent case had onset of paralysis on 14 September (WPV3 from Quetta, Balochistan).

My fellow Rotarians:

There are many service organizations in the world today, but none so old or so successful as Rotary. There are many reasons for that, and Vocational Service is one of them. This year, I wish you to place a special emphasis on Vocational Service, which is sometimes the forgotten Avenue of Service in Rotary.

High ethical standards in business and personal life are still as important today as they were in 1905. Indeed, many of the problems our world is facing today have been caused by the failure to observe such standards in business affairs.

Vocational Service, in Rotary, means that we are committed to honest business and unassailable ethics, and that we are equally committed to using our vocational skills and advantages to help others. The idea is simple enough - but it is unique to Rotary.

Many service organizations are open to anyone who wishes to join. That has never been the case in Rotary. Rotarians only seek out as members those who are qualified - those who have the character, the ability, and the resolve to make a real contribution to their club.

I have long believed that the bedrock of Rotary is our commitment to ethical behavior. It has been putting what's right above what's convenient - and Service Above Self - that has made Rotary different from the rest. That is why we must always remember that whatever we do, we are each the public face of Rotary. We are each the standard-bearers of our organization. What one member does, for good or for ill, reflects on all of us.

So much of what we've achieved as an organization has come about because ofthe trust the world has in Rotary and in Rotarians. That trust has been a major part of our success in polio eradication - the fact that we are known in every community, and known to be people of goodwill and good hearts.

If we wish to see our organization grow and prosper, we must keep Vocational Service front and center in our minds and actions. We must seek out skilled and determined men and women of character. We must do what is right, even when it is inconvenient. And we must always, always, put Service Above Self.

District Conference Dimensions 10 is a two day program to be held on Feb 6th, 7th 2010 at Chennai Trade Centre. We are planning to get Dr. Abdul Kalam, Former President of India as the Chief Guest and Business Man Sri. Nandan Nilekani of Infosys to be the Guest of Honour. Many Business Leaders, VIPs, will take part in the Conference.
The first day program will start around 9.00.a.m in the morning and will get over at 7.00 p.m. to be followed by Entertainment and Dinner. The second day will start at 9.00 a.m. and get over around 5.00 p.m. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner will be there on first day and Breakfast and Lunch will be there for the second day. More than 3000 Rotarians will take part in the Conference. We are also getting about 500 Rotary Anns to participate in the event.

Art auction with proceeds to end Polio

The gavel went down on more than 90 paintings auctioned off for Rotary's challenge in New Delhi on 26 May. Featuring works by artists such as Jamini Roy, M.F. Husain, F.N. Souza, Krishen Khanna, Satish Gujral, Anjolie Ela Menon, and Laxman Pai, the auction raised US$40,000. District 3010 and India National PolioPlus Committee Chair Deepak Kapur organized the event in collaboration with the Swiss Embassy and Dhoomimal Gallery, one of the oldest art galleries in India."The woman and her son who run the art gallery are my neighbors and wanted to be involved with Rotary," Kapur says. "They decided to auction off the works of these prominent artists and have a percentage go to District 3010 fundraising."Kapur adds that the Swiss Embassy became involved through an embassy employee, who is a Rotarian. Through the employee, District 3010 Rotarians obtained the ambassador's support for the fundraiser. The auction drew diplomats, industrialists, local representatives of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and others, including Rotarians."It is a matter of honor for me and my country that we are associated with Rotary in this noble initiative of the eradication of polio," says Philippe Welti, the Swiss ambassador to India. "It is in fact our duty to honor such a noble cause."

Intercity Meeting - Penang Rotary Club Group 1 & 2 and GSE Team from South Korea - 19 December 2008

Penang Rotary Club Group 1 & 2 consisting of The Rotary Club of Penang, The Rotary Club of Georgetown, The Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah ( Group 1) and The Rotary Club of Seberang Jaya and The Rotary Club of Butterworth (Group 2) have their Intercity Meeting at The Paradise Sandy Beach Resort, Tanjung Bungah on 19th December 2008.

We have our District 3300 DG Dr Rajindar Singh & FL PP Surendra Kaur gracing the Intercity meeting and dinner event , Rotarians, Interactors and invited guest.

DG Dr Rajinday gave a warm and welcoming speech to all Rotarians for the Intercity Meeting which is organised by The Rotary Club of Seberang Jaya. He also welcomed the GSE Team from South Korea District 3620 to Malaysia.
Later with the Intercity Meeting declared opened by DG, the five President of Penang Rotary Club Group 1 & 2 each gave a brief speech about their club activities and any matters arising as this is an official meeting for all the Clubs.

The GSE Team from South Korea was lead by GSE Leader PDG Young Ho Lee and four GSE Member and they are Dae Gil Kim, Gun Soon Ha, So Un Kim and Soo Yun Kim. They have been in Malaysia since 07th December 2008 and having travelled to various state for their GSE programme and have been to Kuala Lumpur, Kota Bharu and Kuala Terengganu. They arrived Penang on 17th December 2008 from Kota Bharu and their stay in penang for five days till 21st December 2008 were hosted by Penang Rotary Club Group 1 & 2.

The President of Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah, Aikky Tan play host to GSE Member Ms So Un Kim for her stay in Penang.
The GSE Team gave a presentation during the Intercity Meeting on their team members profile and activities and further insight about South Korea, their country & culture and each of them present a brief introduction about themselves.

With all good things shared, the wonderful buffet spread, fellowship among all the Rotarians & guest, speeches and presentation, exchange of bannerettes all good things must come to an end thus there were many photography sessions among the GSE Team and all host Club during their stay here.

From Penang, the GSE Team will be travelling south towards Perak on Sunday 21st December 2008 with their next stop in Kuala Kangsar and they will be in Malaysia till 07th January 2009.

The Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah wishes all GSE Members a pleasant and wonderful stay in Malaysia and may they bring back a wealth of living experience in this multi culture and ethnic diversity of this beautiful country, Malaysia.

Induction of new Rotarian - John Payne - 18 November 2008

Our weekly meeting on 18th November 2008 was a special occasion whereby there was a new member being inducted into our club. He is none other than Rotarian John Payne who was formely with the Rotary Club of St Ives, District 1290 in Cornwall United Kingdom. He was a club member with St Ives for 10 years and also a council member.

John Payne is now staying in Penang with his beautiful wife , Min Min under the Malaysia My Second Home ( MM2H) programme for about a year.

His induction as a Rotarian into The Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah is inducted by President Aikky Tan and witness by Rotarians present at our club weekly meeting.

With the latest addition of John Payne into our club, our membership is now at 16 and our target is to have 20 Rotarians before the end of Rotary year 2008/2009.

The 18th CHCHS (Chung Hwa Confucian High School,Penang) Interact Club Installation was held on 20th September 2008 at the school hall. This is for the installation of the new incoming President and the new board of directors for year 2008/2009 for CHCHS Interact Club. The organizing committee under the organizing chairman Ooi Poh Ling and her able team members draw out a well planned programme full of fun & entertainment events for this installation day.

There were many invited Interactors from the various schools which include PCGHS and MBS Interact Clubs. Rotarians from The Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah led by PP Ronny Tan, Rotarian TC Low, PP Letchumi, PE Joseph Tang and PP Terence Ee were at the installation to support the Interactors for organising this event. Interact advisor for CHCHS Interact Club Mr Ng Eng Teik was also present and The Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah is thankful for having him to voluntarily guide & lead the Interactors for many years of his service with the school.PP Ronny Tan gave his opening speech on this Installation event and his speech was well received by the Interactors and he reminded them on their role & responsibilities which they must upheld as a Interactors for the new incoming term of service for year 2008/2009.

Mr Ng Eng Teik, Interact Advisor for CHCHS Interact Club in his speech thank the organising committe for a job well done to organise this Installation and the continuity of various task to be undertaken by the Interact Club under the new President Ooi Poh Ling and her new board of directors for the school and community projects for year 2008/2009.
The Installation proper to welcome Incoming President Ooi Poh Ling by Outgoing President Tan Wei Kean was then held and this was also followed by presenting the new board of directors year 2008/2009 with a mention of thanks to the outgoing board of directors who had rendered their own avenues of services for a year.
In her inaugural speech as a President, Ooi Poh Ling reminded her new board of directors and Interactors on the services & task which they must fulfilled and take charge with responsibility in their new role of the CHCHS Interact Club 2008/2009.
Among the exciting programme line up for the installation include games for all Interactors & friends to participate and the blowing off 10 candles with a straw drew a lot of participants with the enthusiastic support in cheering the 4 teams to compete for the winners prize. There were also singing rendered to the delight of those present, break dance demonstration which we must not tried if not properly trained and a master magic performance with his sleight of hands on playing card perfomance.
It was indeed a well organised CHCHS Interact Club Installation event and the Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah would like to take this opportunity to wish the incoming President & her new board of directors 2008/2009 success in all their undertaking and all the best to their studies and also as an Interactors to service the community and the club.

Leadership Programme for Interact Club of PCGHS & Chung Hwa Confucian School - 13 September 2008 organised by Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah, Penang

The Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah, Penang organised a Leadership Training Programme for The Interact Club of PCGHS & SMJK Chung Hwa Confucian School at Penang Chinese Girls' High School (PCGHS) hall on 13 September 2008.

The aim of the Leadership Training Programme is to instill & updates to all Interactors from both Interact Club the roles & functions of Interact Club, responsibilities of Interactors from President to the Board of Directors, leadership role & management, organising Interact Project for the year, Interact Meeting, Club Activities and the protocol requirements.

President Aikky Tan from The Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah delivered his welcoming speech and declared the Leadership Programme opened. In his speech he reminded Interactors of their role model they play in carrying out the activities of their Interact Club and they will be look upon by others on the way things are being organised and carried out. The success of Interact Club in carrying out their functions & activities is very much dependent from the support & co-operation rendered by the members of their Interact Club and thus proper planning & management is essential to carry out any club activities successfully.

Rotary Advisor Past President Ronny Tan gave his briefing to all Interactors on the Club requirements and the rules & regulations in running the club. He reminded all Interactors on their task in organising Interact Project for the year and these 2 project must be each related to community service and another to international project. He also stressed to all Interactors on their Interact Meeting which is to be held on a bi monthly basis and this will include a General Meeting and a Board Meeting which must have the presence of a Rotarian Advisor and teacher advisor for it to be valid.

Past President Ricky Ch'ng gave a talk on public speaking and this was well received and participated by all Interactors which all were given a chance to speak on their club activities and points on improvement highlighted by PP Ricky Ch'ng to all. It was a very interesting & a beneficial talk given to all the Interactors and they have indeed gained a lot from this talk which would be very useful in their future role when they might be required to gave speech or a talk or whenever they need to present themselves to others in any of the Club activities.

Thus with the Leadership Training Programme provided by The Rotary of Tanjung Bungah to both the Interact Club of PCGHS & SMJK Chung Hwa Confucian, it is hope that all Interactors would be able to function better in their respective avenues of the club and also able to carry out the club functions & activities efficiently and properly to the success of the school and the club they represent.

DG Dr Rajindar Singh & First Lady PP Surendra visit to The Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah - 02 Sep 2008

District Governor 2008/2009 Dr Rajindar Singh & First Lady PP Surendra were in Penang for their visit to the various Rotary Club. The Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah play host to DG & First Lady visit to our club on 02nd September 2008.

As The Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah held their weekly meeting at The Paradise Sandy Bay Resort, Tanjung Bungah it was recommended that our DG stayed at this resort as we are in partnership with Paradise Sandy Bay Resort to promote on a "Donate While You Sleep" campaign to raise fund for the club as well as to promote the resort.

On hand to welcome our DG visit were AG Dr Ranjit Singh & President Aikky Tan and fellow Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah.
The line up programme for DG visit start with a welcoming lunch together with Rotarians from The Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah and this was held at a restaurant at the Penang Chinese Swimming Club. Later in the afternoon, DG together with AG met up with the main board members of The Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah with the President Aikky Tan, Secretary PP Michael Ong and Rotarians Joseph Tang for a briefing to DG on the activities and other matters pertaining to the running of the club.
This was then followed up with a meeting from Interactors from the Interact Club of PCGHS & Chung Hwa. President of both Interact Club then briefed visiting DG on their various activities of their respective club and this was followed up on a speech to the Interactors by DG which dealt with the functioning of the club to reach out to more members and promote Rotary activities to all their school & class mates.

Later in the evening, there was an assembly meeting and this was held with the Board of Directors of The Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah presenting their respective avenues activities to DG.

This was then followed up with dinner for invited guests, Interactors, teacher advisors and Rotary Anns. There was a wide spread of sumptuous dish prepared by the resort for the evening and everyone of us have a hearty dinner and the many deserts was indeed tempting for us to take eventhough the belly does not have more space save for this delicious dish! The proper weekly meeting of The Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah was then held with the DG, AG and President at the main table set up. Welcoming speech was given by President Aikky Tan on DG visit to our club and to all our invited guest. DG Dr Rajinbdar Singh then gave his speech on his visit to our club and he was indeed happy to note that the club is functioning well to promote on the Rotary activities in contributing to the various programme for the community.
The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the TAR Schoilarship award to Miss Ban Lee Ching of TAR College and this was presented by our DG to her together with her parents. Fellowship, this is important in Rotary and this would not be complete without knowing each one of us well together with our invited guests. The Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah bade our Distrit Governor 2008/2009 Dr Rajindar Singh & First Lady PP Surendra & family well and appreciation of thanks for their presence to attend this functions with fellow Rotarians and wishing them having a wonderful & memorial stay for the next 2 days visiting other Rotary Club in Penang.

PCGHS (Penang Chinese Girls High School,Penang) Interact Club held it's installation and prom night recently on 20th August 2008 at Tanjung Bungah Beach Hotel It was well attended by more than 70 invited friends from various school & guest, Interactors, teacher advisor and Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah, Penang.

It was also an installation night which saw a team of new board of directors being installed for the year 2008/2009 from the outgoing team. Each Interactors in their own avenues was being introduced to the guest attending this function and appreciation of thanks for the past services performed by the outgoing team.
President Aikky Tan from the Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah gave a very inspiring speech to the Interactors and the new board of directors on the role that they are being entrusted to undertake in each avenues and that they are the future members of Rotarians to carry on the role in this organisation in community services.Ng Shu May, the incoming president of PCGHS Interact Club 2008/2009 gave her inaugural speech on this installation night and seek full cooperation from the new board of directors to carry on the task given from their respective avenues and their participation for the club organized events.
It was a well organized installation and prom night which have many interesting events lined up for the Interactors & friends such as a hip hop dance , modelling event, group singing and dance performance.

Of course with such well organized line up event to keep each one of us entertained, there must be good food to go and these were well taken care off by the organizing committee event for this installation & prom night.Syabas!! to the PCGHS Interact Club & the organizing committee for a job well done and we certainly look forward to attend to their next event.

Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka! Each year the shouts of independence echo from every nook and corner of the country on August 31 to mark Merdeka Day or Independence Day.

This year, the nation celebrates its 51st year of independence. It was on August 30, 1957 that then Chief Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj opened Stadium Merdeka. The next day, history was made as the Union Jack was lowered and the Malaysian flag rose, with Tunku Abdul Rahman making the famous rallying cries "Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka!" as the first Prime Minister of the Federation of Malaya.

Merdeka Day not only celebrates the anniversary of Malaysia’s independence, but how that independence was achieved. Malaysia brought itself together by transcending cultural and ethnic boundaries, and has maintained respect and unity amongst its diverse nation of people throughout the past 51 years.

So, all Rotarians & friends let's celebrate Merdeka on 31st August 2008 (Sunday) and anyway if you are out the whole night long, don't worry as the next day-Monday is a replacement holiday... Wow all of us would have a long weekend holidays from 30th August to 01st September 2008..so what's the plan ?

Welcome to the 21st Installation Banquet of the Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah , I am Ricky Ch'ng and I am Victor Lee and we are the Master Ceremony of tonight Installation Banquet...

The 21st Installation Banquet of the Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah which was held on 26th July 2008 at The Northam All Suite, Penang was well attended by fellow Rotarians from various Rotary Club, Interact Club and invited friends & guests.
The guest of honour for this Installation Banquet was graced by the State Assemblyman for Tanjung Bungah, Yang Berhormat Mr Teh Yee Cheu.
Among the invited guests were Rotarians from Rotary Club of Penang & Georgetown, Butterworth, Seberang Jaya and Kuala Lumpur DiRaja. Rotarians John Richard & Irene Goh from Rotary Club of Hope Island Gold Coast, Australia was holidaying in town and was the invited guest of incoming president Aikky Tan.
The installation ceremony of President Aikky Tan 2008/2009 was held with the handover of the President jewels by Outgoing President Chuck Yin 2007/2008 and with that, a new term of exciting year ahead to be helmed by the the President & his Board of Directors.
Our organising chairman, PE Joseph Tang and his organizing committee have indeed put in a lot of effort and time to ensure all of us have a wonderful & enjoyable evening with the many entertaining programme lined up for this function.

With the good & delicious 8 course food served by the hotel , there were also 3 exciting and entertainment programmed lined up to keep all the guest entertained throughout the evening.

There was the group of beautiful ladies performing line dancing, hip hop break dance and the highlight of the evening was a group of Belly Dancers performing to the swaying tunes of the pulsating rhythms of the belly dance beat.

Georgetown, Penang UNESCO World Heritage Sites - Celebrations - 25th to 27th July 2008

The historical Straits Settlement cities of George Town and Malacca have just been classified as Unesco World Heritage sites.

The two towns constitute a unique architectural and cultural townscape without parallel anywhere in East and Southeast Asia,” said the citation on the Unesco Heritage list website. Malaysia had been bidding for the prestigious listing since 2004.

The core areas encompass the historical sites of George Town, including the Lebuh Acheh historical enclave and sites such as the Lebuh Acheh Malay Mosque, Jalan Mesjid Kapitan Kling Mosque, the Goddess of Mercy Temple, Sri Mariamman Temple, Khoo Kongsi, St George’s Church, Assumption Church, St Xavier’s Institution, Convent Light Street, Little India, the museum and court building, the commercial area of Beach Street, Fort Cornwallis, Esplanade, City Hall, the clan jetties and the port areas.

Listing George Town and Malacca on the World Heritage List would definitely help to boost the tourism in both states in a long run.

The historic centres of Melaka and Georgetown in Malaysia have developed over 500 years of trading and cultural exchange between east and west, imbuing both places with a unique multicultural heritage.

In Georgetown, the capital of Penang, the new world heritage site comprises the old 18th-century town grid along the waterfront, as well as the surrounding historic and multicultural neighbourhoods. A true melting pot of architecture and culture, Georgetown was founded in 1786 as a base for the East India Company. But its most popular attractions are probably now the Kapitan Keling Mosque, Khoo Kongsi and Sri Mariamman Temple.

Here, in Georgetown Penang there is a line up of programme to celebrate UNESCO listing of Georgetown as a World Heritage Site from 25 to 27 July 2008.

The Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah is indeed very proud of such listing by UNESCO World Heritage Site for Georgetown and Congratulations to all who make such a rare listing by UNESCO a SUCCESS !!! SYABAS to ALL....

Hike up to Pantai Kerachut , Teluk Bahang - Penang National Park

The Penang National Park is located at the North-East corner of Penang and fronts the Straits of Malacca. The main entrance to the park is located in Teluk Bahang. Visitors should register themselves and obtain entry permits at the Penang National Park counter in Teluk Bahang.

Penang National Park, a natural forest is also called "Bay of Glowing Amber" due to its scenic and spectacular sunset. The natural attractions of Penang National Park include the Hill Dipterocarp Forests, Mangrove Forest areas. Sandy Beach habitats, the unique seasonal meromictic lake and the open coastal seas.

Turtles
The beaches at the Penang National Park are among the turtle landing sites in the peninsular. The turtle species that nest on these beaches include the Green (Chelonia mydas) and the Olive-Ridley (Lepidochelys olicacea) turtle species. Among the beaches that are locations for turtle landings are Pantai Kerachut and Pantai Teluk Kampi.

About Pantai Kerachut

Undisturbed, unspoilt & tranquility is what best to describe Pantai Kerachut. Located at the north-east of Penang Island along the Muka Head cape, it is one of six beaches in Penang National Park.This relatively unknown place is normally frequent by locals who went there to explore the lush greenery of Penang National Park & to camp at the designated campsite near the beach. Lately, more & more foreign tourist starts to give this fantastic place, a stop over.

There are a number of ways to reach Pantai Kerachut. This trail is the shortest. Use the common trail from Teluk Bahang to Pasir Pandak, and branch off from the coast at the first suspension bridge heading for Pantai Kerachut. This path could take about two hours. You will cross a stream and pass a track that leads down towards Sungai Tukun. The last part of the trail makes a steep descent into Pantai Kerachut valley. You have to wade across a stream to reach the beach but there is now a hanging bridge that could take you across the meromictic lake and onto Kerachut beach.

Pantai Kerachut has a beautiful stretch of white sandy beach, popular for picnics and camping. The meromictic lake is also located in Pantai Kerachut.

The memorictic lake is the greatest attraction here. Warm saline water below and fresh water on top. Crab, rare fishes and large prawns are quite common. The fishery department has built a turtle sanctuary.

This sandy stretch is also the nesting place of the Green Turtles from April to August, and the Olive-Ridley from September to February. The turtle hatchery was set up in Pantai Kerachut in 1995. Take care not to disturb the turtle nesting grounds. Let's save the turtles.

The Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah, Penang held its inaugural Rotary Year 2008/2009 meeting on 01st July 2008 and it was chaired by our incoming President Aikky Tan and well attended by the Board of Directors under the Club Leadership Plan (CLP).

This inaugural meeting is also very auspicious as we have 3 new Rotarians being inducted and they are Ron Mcleod,TC Low & Khaw Fung Fung. Ron is from the Rotary Club of Waarnambool Central Australia and is now making Penang his second home of stay as thus to continue his Rotarian fellowship, he joined the Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah.

In his inaugural speech, President Aikky Tan place his record of appreciation to past President Chuck Yin and his Board of Directors, fellow Rotarians of Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah who have contributed immensely by their participation of the club activities during year 2007/2008 and would now thus seek for their continued support & guidance during his term as President 2008/2009.

Later, President Aikky Tan lead the new Rotarians by reading the Rotary pledge and witness the official induction ceremony of the 3 new Rotarians and welcomed them to the Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah.President Aikky Tan also announced his team for the Board of Director under the Club Leadership Plan (CLP) 2008/2009 and his monthly itinerary & activities from June 2008 to May 2009.

Driving Adventure - Penang to Phuket - Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah

If you are planning for a holiday trip, why not consider driving to Phuket it's affordable, fun, adventurous & exciting. Just forget about airlines booking, just pre-book your accomodation with any of the hotels or resorts in Phuket, have your vehicle serviced and that's all off you need and off you go & drive all the way from Penang to Phuket !!! For seating comfort of the passengers & with more leg room space, ideally 4 adults would be just nice and of course with plenty of car boot space for all the shopping spree which would definitely filled to the brim on the returned trip.

I am sharing the trip experience and the milestones which would be helpful if you intend to drive.

Journey by road- Driving from Penang to Phuket, Thailand

Penang >> Bukit Kayu Hitam(BKH) >> Sadao >>Patthalung >>Trang >> Krabi >> Phang Nga >> Phuket

As you drive along, follow the above sign board showing the direction to the above destination and these are quite easily seen ( green colour for standard highway signage )

Example: From Sadao after Immigration & Customs clearance, drive along until you could see Patthalung direction sign board, then follow Patthalung direction all the way until you could see Trang direction sign board, then again follow Trang direction all the way until the next………

Mileage : Penang to Phuket = about 650 kms
Sadao to Phuket = about 500 kms

Penang to Bukit Kayu Hitam about 130kms about 1 ½ hrs (fill petrol before arriving BKH – 2 petrol station at Napoh : Shell & Petronas as petrol is much higher in Thailand & also change currency into Thai Bhat can be done here. Petrol in Thailand is about MYR3.90 per liter)

Bukit Kayu Hitam, Malaysia Immigration clearance – exit Malaysia ( drive through counter about 10 to 20 minutes)
Sadao, Thailand Immigration & Customs clearance – entry into Thailand (about 20 minutes to 1 hr & depending on the passenger & traffic situation)

MILESTONE

Sadao to Patthalung about 52kms about 45minutes (can have breakfast here-Koay Teow soup)
Patthalung to Trang about 200kms about 2hrs (stopover Trang for Lunch, alot of Hokkien people here and famous for roast pork)
Trang to Krabi about 114kms about 1 ½ hrs
Krabi to Phang Nga about 95kms about 1hr(coffee break at Phang Nga-Amazon Cafe..nice coffee and not to be missed)
Phang Nga to Phuket ( crossing through Sarasin Bridge, you would not realise you have cross this bridge until someone told you) about 50kms about 1 hr
Sarasin Bridge to Phuket Town/Patong area etc about 30kms about 20 minutes

Road condition :
Penang to Bukit Kayi Hitam : Malaysia Highway – superb & excellent
Sadao to Trang : 2 lane highway - excellent
Trang to Phuket : 1 to 2 lane highway – easy, careful & overtaking required

Overall comment : Relaxing, quite easy & enjoying motoring all the way with some overtaking skills required at provincial areas. If it rains then have to be extra careful driving at provincial areas & nearby district areas

Ideally, the journey from Penang should be as early as possible (depart at 0700hrs) so that you could be in Phuket before 1700hrs ( Thailand local time as the total journey is about 650kms and driving time is about 8 to 9hrs) to search for the hotel, shower, rest & have a nice dinner.

Note : Thailand time is + 7hrs GMT thus is 1 hr behind Malaysia Time. All time shown in Malaysia Time and need to adjust accordingly upon arriving Sadao , Thailand

Stop over in Phang Nga for a drink at "Amazon Cafe", their coffee is one of the best we have ever drank...yummie

Vehicle Requirements :

Vehicle to be in tip top condition ( to have vehicle serviced before the journey)
Purchase additional vehicle insurance coverage ( from your current car insurer’s) for 1st party coverage for vehicle to be in the Kingdom of Thailand as our present insurance coverage is up to Malaysia & Singapore only. It’s an additional of about MYR190.00 for a 9 days coverage period and please confirm on the number of days required & at different charges.
Original vehicle registration document ( from JPJ ) please remember to get it from your Bank one day earlier (if your vehicle is still under loan servicing)
Purchase Thailand insurance coverage and this can be obtained at any insurance agent counter in Bukit Kayu Hitam ( BKH) . It’s about MYR16.00 for a 7 days coverage and will be given a certificate to be displayed in the front windscreen

Vehicle & Passenger clearance at Bukit Kayu Hitam (BKH), Malaysia

After Immigration clearance at BKH for passengers ( passengers need not get off from the vehicle as passport clearance can be done through the driver by handling all passport to Immigration officer stationed at drive through counter) , drive vehicle to Malaysian exit check point and show to the officer stationed there the original vehicle registration certificate (from JPJ). It’s simple from Malaysia side and just drive into Sadao after that.
Vehicle & Passenger clearance at Sadao, Thailand

After Immigration clearance ( must prepare & pay MYR1.00 or BHT10.00 for overtime service for each passenger) at Sadao for passengers ( all vehicle passengers need to get off from the vehicle and present passport & embarkation card personally to Immigration office as instant photograph will be taken – the vehicle will be parked at an assigned location), go to Customs check station for declaration of import of vehicle into Thailand by submitting a copy of vehicle registration certificate ( from JPJ) and passport of vehicle owner.

Thailand Customs will data entry such details into their systems and will be given a declaration permit to hand over for manual registration & process and getting owner’s signature on the Customs form.

Then take the vehicle out and this can then be then be brought into Thailand and upon arriving the control station, a copy of the import declaration will be given to driver by Customs officer there and THIS MUST BE KEPT PROPERLY as upon exit from Thailand back to Malaysia, this import declaration need to be registered before the vehicle is allowed to go out from the Kingdom of Thailand. Without this import declaration shown, the vehicle will be forfeited and not allowed to leave Thailand. This is quite fast & without much hassle and depending on the traffic situation. You and your vehicle is now into Thailand and can drive anywhere that you would like to visit.

Penang Bon Odori Carnival 2008 - 19 July 2008

A traditional Japanese festival with dance and drum performances held to welcome the homecoming of ancestral spirits and the organiser is The Consulate-General of Japan, Penang.

For this year, "Penang Bon Odori Carnival 2008" would be held at the Esplanade (Padang Kota Lama) on Saturday, 19 July 2008 from 6pm to 11pm
.

Bon Odori Festival in Penang, like in other parts of the world, is celebrated with great enthusiasm. Bon Odori is observed during Obon, which in turn is Buddhist holiday that originated in Japan to pay tribute to the ancestral spirits. The customs of this festival varies from one region to another but the traditional celebration includes a Bon dance with people dancing to the tune of musicians and singers of the Obon music around a wooden building.

This Buddhist dance festival is celebrated as a reminder of the gratefulness one should feel toward their ancestors. Bon Odori originates from the story of a Buddhist disciple who envisioned his deceased mother in the Realm of Hungry Ghosts where she was endulging in her own selfishness. Greatly disturbed, he went to Buddha and asked how he could release his mother from this realm. Buddha advised his disciple to perform some charitable act in memory of his mother. The disciple did this and, thus, saw his mother's release for the Realm of Hungry Ghosts. He also began to see the true nature of her past unselfishness and the many sacrifices that she had made for him. The disciple, happy because of his mother's release and grateful for his mother's kindness, danced with joy. From this dance of joy comes Bon Odori or Bon Dance, a time in which our ancestors and their sacrifices are remembered and appreciated.

Today the Bon Odori Festival participants continue this custom as they dance in traditional Japanese dress, including kimonos, yukata (cotton kimonos), and hopi coats (short coats styled like a kimono top). The dances may include the use of fans, castinets, straw hats or cotton towels and recall both daily life in Japan and rememberance of ancestors.

The festival in Penang will see many stall selling food, Japanese & local as well as promotion of Japanese products during this time.

About "Wheelchairs on Loan Scheme"
The ROTARY CLUB of TANJUNG BUNGAH together with the cooperation from KOBAY TECHNOLOGY BERHAD, a company listed on the Main Board of Bursa Security Malaysia Berhad, has set up a "Wheelchairs on Loan Scheme" to offer a helping hand to those in need of a wheelchair to transport and aid mobility on temporary basis, or yet are unable to purchase one. This is another community service project of Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah. It is the intention of our club to make this project sustainable and also on a long term basis by working with any corporate organisations and private individuals to fund this project on a continual basis.

Target groups for the "Wheelchairs on Loan Scheme"

1.All individuals that are temporarily mobility disabled due to accidents or other mishap

2.Others as and when the need deem appropriate by the Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah and Tejani Medical Clinic

The "Wheelchairs on Loan Scheme" shall be implemented by the Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah and managed by Tejani Medical Clinic, Tanjung Bungah.

All requests for loan of wheelchairs and the Terms & Conditions for the loan of the wheelchairs shall be handled by Tejani Medical Clinic.

Launching of the Wheelchairs on Loan Scheme" - 10th June 2008 at Wisma Masyarakat Penyayang ( Penang Caring Complex)

The "Wheelchairs on Loan Scheme" was officially launched with the participation and assistance rendered from Penang General Hospital team and this was graced by the Pengarah of Penang General Hospital (Director of Penang General Hospital), Puan Dr.Juita.

The emcee for this event is PP Ricky Ch'ng and he welcomed Puan Dr Juita for being able to be with us to witness this launching, our Corporate Sponsor for this project, Kobay Technology Berhad which was represented by Mr KS Wan, COO of Kobay Technology, Administrator of the Wheelchairs on Loan Scheme, Dr Jitendra of Tejani Medical Centre and his staff, staff of Penang General Hospital,fellow Rotarians, partners in service, recipients of the Wheelchairs on Loan Scheme,invited guest and friends.

There was also an address by President of Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah, Chuck Yin who introduce the audience on Rotary Club activities and their communities service projects and highlight the contributions made by Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah and now in particular the benefits of "Wheelchairs on Loan Scheme" to those in need of a wheelchair and unable to purchase one.

The Pengarah of Penang General Hospital, Puan Dr Juita was also invited to gave a speech on this auspicious occasions of the launching and she share with the audience on the many activities and programme undertaken by the hospital on community health care for the people. It was indeed beneficial to all of us present on the facts & figures of the number of patients handled by the hospital and the many challenges and progress the hospital have made in giving out health care services to the people. While touching on this project of "Wheelchairs on Loan Scheme" undertaken by the Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah , she commended the club of the contributions to the general public and it was indeed a noble one which could in a way help to provide assistance to those in need of a wheelchair for the unfortunate who are unable to purchase one.

The highlights of the "Wheelchairs on Loan Scheme" was the presentation of a mock cheque of MYR5,000 towards the sponsorhip on the purchase of 20 wheelchairs which would be given on loan to those needy recipients by Mr KS Wan the COO of Kobay Technology Bhd to the club which was received by President Chuck Yin and witnessed by Puan Dr Juita, the Pengarah of Penang General Hospital.

Later, Mr KS Wan together with President Chuck Yin presented the wheelchairs to the recipients present and with this the Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah has launched yet another service community project and congratulations to the club and fellow Rotarians who have contributed tirelessly to make this project a success. 20th Anniversary Dinner Celebration of The Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah-24May08

Enjoy viewing some of the pictures taken during the 20th Anniversary Dinner celebration of The Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah which was held on 24th May 2008-Saturday at Paradise Sandy Bay Hotel, Tanjung Bungah.

The MC of the dinner was none other than our PP Ricky Ch'ng who took us down memory lane way back in 1988 with the slide presentation show and from the archive photograph, many Rotarians were really very young, macho and handsome way back 20 years ago.

Wow , you would not be able to recognise our 2 founding members of the club in 1988 from the photograph and who are still with us tonight and it's a wonderful reflection of how they look 20 years ago and they are our PP Ricky Ch'ng and PP Ronny Tan. They really without doubt looks young, handsome and macho then. Our appreciation to both of them for still being with the club and look forward to their continuous support, guidance and contributions to bring the club to greater heights.

President Chuck Yin gave us a welcome speech and thanks all Rotarians for their support & contributions given to the club and of course their effort to organise this 20th Anniversary Dinner which was attended by fellow Rotarians, Rotary Anns, Rotary Kids, Interact Club members and invited guests.

There was a sumptuous buffet spread of dishes prepared by the hotel for this dinner and we are sure everyone of us had a good meal and time together with The Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah in celebrating their 20th Anniversary Dinner Celebration. Enjoys ......

Happy Dumpling Festival - 08 June 2008

Hi folks out there, do you know that dumpling festival is coming soon and maybe just to remind you all of this rich traditional Chinese festival which is celebrated yearly please read on the folk tale of the Dumpling Festival which is also celebrated by Chinese in Malaysia.

On the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, Chinese communities celebrate the Duan Wu Festival 端午节, also known as the Dumpling Festival, Dragon boat Festival.

The festival commemorates Qu Yuan 屈原, a patriotic poet from the Kingdom of Chu 楚国during the Warring States period 战国时代who committed suicide upon hearing the fall of Chu’s capital city to the Qin armies 秦军.

He was believed to have drowned himself in the Miluo River 汨罗江on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month in 278 BCE. Civilians around the area row their boats out to try to save him or to recover his body. They beat on drums and gongs to frighten away fishes and sea creature to prevent them from eating his body. When these efforts proved futile, they threw rice dumplings into the river to prevent the sea creatures from attacking his body.

Qu Yuan came to symbolize patriotism and on his death anniversary date, it became a custom to organize Dragon boat races 赛龙舟and to consume dumplings 粽子

In 2008, the 5th day of the 5th lunar month falls on 8 June 2008 which is a Sunday.

So any dumpling for all of us ....maybe someone will bring us some dumplings for all of us during our next weekly meeting of The Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah on 10 June 2008 - Tuesday at Paradise Sandy Bay Hotel at 2000hrs. Yummie...we must all keep our stomach empty....we need more than 10 pieces...make my mouth watery !!!

Anyway, HAPPY DUMPLING FESTIVAL to ALL.

Rotary Multimedia Mobile Library - Playbus Project by Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah

On 30th May 2008, Catherine King who is the RI TRF Matching Grant Coordinator was in Penang and she was warmly welcomed by Rotarians from The Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah to witness and shown around the Rotary Multimedia Mobile Library at the Penang State Library. This playbus project is an initiative undertaken by The Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah which was launched in year 2004 with the matching grant fund from RI TRF. At the same time, she was also taken on a tour to the Penang State Library and shown on the various library and educational facilities provided by them.

On hand at the Penang State Library to welcome Catherine King were PP Ricky Ch'ng, PP Ronny Tan, PP Terence Ee, PP Dr Jitendra, Rotarians Philip Yee and Rotarians Joseph Tang.

Welcome to this blog site of Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah, Penang, Malaysia. We are under Rotary International District 3300 Malaysia charter. Let's go back to get a little bit of history of Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah set up to know the club better and it has a very long and interesting set up way back to 1988.

In fact the Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah just celebrated their 20th Anniversary Dinner with fellow Rotarians, friends and invited guest at Paradise Sandy Bay Hotel on 24th May 2008. PP Ricky Ch'ng bring all of us down to memory lane way back to 1988 and through the wonderful slide presentation , all these bring us fond memories. From the original members set up team of Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah which was chartered on 24th May 1988 we have 2 members who are still with us and actively supporting the club activities till this date and they are of course non other than PP Ricky Ch'ng and PP Ronny Tan. Wow! 20 years still with us is a long way for them to sacrifice their time, energy, support and dedication and showing their true spirit in upholding the spirit of Rotary in all of us. We know that both of them will still be with Rotary for another 20 years as their experience & knowledge in running the club as to where it is now will be indeed a valuable assets for the younger generation to follow. This is a tough feat to beat ...20 years as founding members. Salute to both PP Ricky Ch'ng and PP Ronny Tan !!.
